He Cheated, I Need to Sell My Ring, but Don't Know How To

No one ever wants to think about their marriage ending, but sometimes that's a reality. What do you do if you need to sell your ring? Where do you sell it? Should you get an appraisal? On top of the stress and heartbreak of a marriage ending, the last thing you want to deal with is how to get rid of your rings, so I'm writing this section to ease some of that stress with some, hopefully helpful tips.

Every once in a while I get the soon to be divorced bride or groom looking to sell a wedding set. A lot of women and men come in asking to get an appraisal on their wedding set, the first question I ask is "what are you wanting an appraisal for?" if the answer is "I need to sell this," well then this article is for you.

To appraise or not to appraise, that is the question

“Someone is only going to give you what they think your piece of jewelry is worth"

An appraisal is a stated value of a piece of jewelry, whether that is for insurance purposes or what the item would sell for on the open market. Just because you have a piece of paper stating a value does not mean that's what you'll get for the item when you sell it. Here is where the fine line of whether to appraise or not to appraise arises.

Most of the time people are just looking to have a piece verified, i.e. it's a 2 carat , VS1, G color diamond. If this is what you need, no problem. You'll still have to pay a fee for this, but it should be less than an actual appraisal. If you're going to be selling at a pawn shop or consignment store the staff will most likely be able to verify what your rings are, however if you would feel more comfortable having a jeweler who isn't going to buy your item look at it, by all means stop in!

I Know What I Have, Now What?

Once you've figured out what you're selling, you have a good start. The next step is to decide how fast you want the money. If you want cash in hand now, I suggest going to a pawn shop, jewelry store that buys over the counter, or a consignment store. Do your research here, call around or visit places to see what you can get and to get an idea of who offers the best price. If you honestly don't care how much money you get, and just want that bad juju gone, head over to the pawn shop and say #byefelicia. If you're able to wait a little while and don't need the cash ASAP, keep reading...

Sell it Yourself

" Get the most money you can”

This isn't a guarantee that you're going to get a lot of money, but by selling something yourself you are cutting out the middle man, which obviously means more money in your pocket. Sites like Facebook Marketplace, Ebay, and the like are great options to sell. Do your own homework here, and be careful! Be wary of scammers or people who could potentially hurt you at exchange. I believe your local police department usually has a safe area to make such transactions, so call and see!

Sell Online, but Through Someone Else

There are also websites such as I Do, Now I Don't, 1st Dibs, or other auction sites that will post your items for a fee. I'm not too familiar with this route and what these companies' fees are, but it's worth a shot to check it out!
